Go along

Going to a doctor, hospital, school or sports club for the first time can be exciting: “What are the customs in the Netherlands?” Some refugees can handle this well, others cannot, especially when health is at stake.

If you, as a buddy, notice that they find a visit exciting, you can offer whether they would like you to go with them.

In the Netherlands we know the concept of “empowering people.” How do you do that in integration processes? Are you going to stand in front of someone? Then you defend him or her.
Are you going to stand behind someone? Then the person standing in front of you gets the full brunt.
Or will you stand next to him or her? Then you have the opportunity to express “we stand together, you don’t have to do it alone.”
You let him or her do the talking and jump in or join in if you notice that this is necessary.
That is enough. This way, going along becomes a great reassurance
